Luna Vargas was the widow of the President-Elect of the United States, Francisco Vargas, and was the 50th Vice President of the United States under President Mellie Grant until her death.

The character of Luna Vargas was a recurring character in the sixth season of Scandal.

Season 6

Luna's husband, Francisco Vargas, was briefly the President-Elect of the United States of America until he was assassinated by Eli Pope during his victory speech. The latter was blackmailed and ordered to assassinate Frankie by Theodore Peus and Samantha Ruland due to their plan of making Mellie Grant the President.

When Jake Ballard is forced off Mellie's ticket by Peus and Ruland in order for the former to become Mellie's Vice President, Olivia made a play to get the time to choose a new Vice President for Mellie. They then decided, and then later Mellie announced, that Luna was to be her new Vice President.

After Mellie's inauguration, Olivia comes to the realization that it was actually Luna who masterminded the assassination of Francisco Vargas. Luna confesses that she hired Peus and Ruland to kill her husband so that she could use the unlimited political capital gained from his death to pass a legislative agenda never before seen in American politics - all in Frankie's name. Olivia and Jake then forced Luna to choose between committing suicide via poisoned pills or be shot in the head by Jake, buried in a forest, and have the world and her children know what an evil woman she was. In order to preserve her legacy, Luna chose to take the pills and waited in terror until she fell asleep and succumbed to a fatal heart attack. ("Transfer of Power")
