Bellamy Young is an American actress who portrays Mellie Grant on ABC's Scandal.

Background

Born in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, Young graduated from Yale University with dual degrees in English & Theater Studies; she also holds a certificate from Oxford University in England. Young moved to NYC after college to follow her first love: singing. She starred on Broadway as 'Mary' in Cy Coleman's "The Life" & as 'Meg' in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along." Other favorite theater credits while in NYC include playing 'Margaret' in the world premiere of Randy Newman's "Faust" and 'LouAnn' in the world premiere of Landford Wilson's "Book of Days." It was here that she made her television debut as 'Dr. Courtney Evans' on the soap "Another World."

Career Background

Young moved to Los Angeles, landing the roles of 'Cathy Metsker' in Randall Wallace's "We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson, Madeleine Stowe, & Greg Kinnear and 'Rachel' in JJ Abrams' "Mission Impossible: 3" with Tom Cruise and Keri Russell. She has also made a number of independent films there including the Sundance favorite "The Freebie" starring Dax Shepard and "A Country Remedy" starring Joshua Leonard, which she helped produce, filming it in her home state of North Carolina. Once in LA, Young also began a long & varied career on television, appearing to date on over 40 shows including "Grey's Anatomy," "Private Practice," "2 1/2 Men," "The West Wing," "ER," "Frasier," "Boston Legal," "Cold Case," "NCIS," and "Law & Order." Young can currently be seen in her award winning role as First Lady Mellie Grant on ABC's hit series "Scandal" and in the upcoming Zoe Cassavetes' film, "Day out of Days." Young is also working on an adult contemporary album that will include covers of Fleetwood Mac, Tom Waits and Ryan Adams.

On May 15, 2015, Young released her first album, Far Away So Close, on iTunes. In 2016, she starred in the crime drama film The Night Stalker directed by Megan Griffiths about the serial killer Richard Ramirez. The following year, she had a supporting role in the independent comedy film Bernard and Huey opposite Jim Rash and David Koechner. In 2018, she co-starred in Disney's live action adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, along with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling.

In March 2019, Young announced that she would be co-starring in the fox drama pilot 'Prodigal Son' opposite Michael Sheen, Lou Diamond Phillips and Tom Payne. In May, the show was green-lit for a series order and by October, had been picked up for a full 22-episode season order . Prodigal Son was the first full season order of fall 2019 and was the highest-rated new show on any network.
